Bumper maize production likely

JAMALPUR, Apr 11 (BSS): Farmers of the district are expecting a bumper yield of maize this year.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, growers are getting a good production. It may exceed the target.
DAE sources said some 8,647 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the crop cultivation with the production target of 75,661 tonnes.
Maize is being grown on 250 hectares of land in Jamalpur Sadar, 680 hectares in Sarishabari, 190 hectares in Melandah, 1420 hectares in Islampur, 4,600 hectares in Dewanganj, 357 hectares in Madarganj and 1,150 hectares of land in Bakshiganj.
Don-111, Kavery-50, Miracle, NK-40, pioneer, NH-7720, Specific and Uttaran-2 are most popular maize varieties, DAE sources added.
Sources said farmers in char areas have cultivated maize on an extensive land as soil of the area is suitable for the crop farming. Moreover, good market price encourages the cultivators to grow the crop on more land.
