Bumper mustard output expected in B'baria

BRAHMANBARIA, Feb 14: A bumper mustard harvest is expected in Brahmanbaria district this season as its production has doubled in some areas of the district, sources said.
Massive steps were taken to cultivate mustard in eight upazilas of Brahmanbaria district in the current season. The farmers remained busy nursing the transplanted lands in the district.
Meanwhile, the crops have almost matured and the plants were full of flowers, which added a scenic beauty to the fields.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 6811 hectares of land were brought under mustard cultivation this year with the target of 8532 metric tons. Of the target 1300 hectares were cultivated at Ashuganj, 350 hectares at Akhaura, 1660 hectares at Nasirnagar, 406 hectares at Bancharampur, 1500 hectares at Nabinagar, 750 hectares at Sarail, 395 hectares at Sadar and 450 hectares of land at Kasba upazilas.
The target was ten percent higher than the previous year. The farmers were learning to the farming gradually as it is a short-term crop and they were getting benefit from it. The harvesting of the crop would likely to be completed by the third week of February.
Gias Uddin, a farmer at Sarail Upazila told the Financial Express that he managed seeds from BADC and cultivated three acres of land. He was very optimistic about the farming. He cultivated his lands at the very beginning of this season.
Habibur Rahman, Sadar Upazila Agriculture officer said that the farmers were becoming interested about mustard in recent years. The lifetime of the crop is around 100 days.
The local farmers are happy with the harvest and its high price, sources added.
