Bumper mustard production expected in S-W region

TANGAIL, Jan 29: Mustard cultivators of the district and DAE Tangail are expecting a bumper production of mustard, due to a favourable climatic condition.
Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) Tangail sources said, a total 33761 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation with the production target of 40513 metric tonnes. The availability of agri inputs and favourable climatic condition make DAE Tangail to expect a bumper production of mustard.
Deputy Director Azizullah DAE Tangail said, this year office setup cultivation target 33761 hectares of land but the farmers of the district cultivated 38589 hectares of land and the target exceed by 482 hectares of land.
Aynul Haque, a mustard cultivator, under Hugra union of sadar Upazila said, he has cultivated mustard 5 acres of his land and its plantation found in very good condition, if there is no natural disaster he hopes a bumper production.
Our Correspondent in Khulna reports: The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has drawn up a massive mustard farming plan for the current season in ten south-western districts.
The officials said due to bumper production of mustard last year, the enthusiastic farmers are now putting all out efforts to make the programme a success. A total of 62,772 hectares of land had been cultivated and produced 84,618 metric tonnes mustard in this region.
The DAE sources said a total of 63,830 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in ten districts of the region. Of them 13,355 hectares land in Jessore, 11,590 hectares in Magura,  9,975 hectares in Jhenidah, 7,230  hectares in Satkhira, 6,150 hectares in Meherpur, 5,980 hectares in Narail, 4,510 hectares in Kushtia, 3,925 hectares in Chuadanga, 745 hectares in Bagerhat and 370 hectares of land brought under in Khulna district.
As a result, more land has been brought under mustard cultivation than the target fixed for the region and there will be a bumper production if the climatic conditions remain favourable during the season, the officials have said.
While talking to this correspondent, some farmers in Lohagora and Narail Sadar upazilas expressed their happiness over the support they got from the DAE.
Tariqul Islam, a farmer of Mikshimil village under Dumuria Upazila in Khulna, said he cultivated mustard on five acres of land this year. He expects to earn Tk 2 lakh by harvesting mustard this year.
Alomgir Hossen of Kolora village under Satkhira district told this correspondent that he cultivated mustard on three acres of land. 'If the weather remains favourable, I'll get 15 mounds of which will fetch a profit of Tk 90,000 this year," he added.
