RANGPUR, Dec 17 (BSS): Harvesting of the early variety mustard seeds is expected to begin from the middle of January next, officials in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) told the news agency Thursday.
Farmers of the northern districts are expecting a bumper production of mustard this year as they have achieved the farming target. They have already completed sowing mustard seeds after harvesting early variety Aman crop and vegetables and the blooming crop is growing under favourable climatic conditions everywhere including the char areas, the officials said.
According to the sources in the DAE's Rangpur Zonal Office, harvesting of the early variety mustard seeds is expected to begin from the middle of January next.
A target of producing 97,731 tonnes of mustard seeds from 97,731 hectres land has been fixed for the 16 northern regions including the vast char lands on the river basins during this Rabi season.
The DAE, BADC, BARI and some NGOs and organisations have distributed quality mustard seeds and the RAKUB and other commercial banks disbursed agriculture loans among the farmers to achieve the fixed target of mustard farming.
The blossoming mustard fields look an almost neon yellow in the vast char areas, such as, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Sirajganj and Pabna districts on the river basins, where the seeds were sowed earlier.
After getting bumper productions and excellent prices of mustard in recent years, the farmers have been showing more interests in farming the cash crop in more land during this season, they added.
Deputy director of DAE Kamal Shariful Alam told the news agency that adequate training, technical assistance, inputs, high yielding variety quality seeds, latest agri-technologies and agri-loans had been provided to the farmers to make the programme successful.
The farmers have mostly sowed the popular high yielding variety mustard seeds evolved by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) this time.
The DAE has intensified its motivational activities including proper trainings on the latest technologies for the farmers under the ongoing seven-year Special Action Plan (SAP) launched in 2004 for increasing oil seed, pulse and spice productions.
Under the SAP, hundreds of block exhibitions have so far been demonstrated under the supervision of the DAE experts and high quality foundation seeds, necessary fertilisers, pesticides and inputs are being distributed among the farmers, he added.
