RANGPUR, Mar 20: A bumper production of litchis is likely to be achieved in Rangpur division in the current season, as the trees bloomed massively with the blessings of spring. Being a lucrative fruit item litchi cultivation has been gaining popularity in the region, as hundreds of farmers attained self-reliance through it in recent years in the region. Sources of Department of Agriculture Extension said, there are over 70 million litchi trees in some 7,700 small, medium and large sized litchi orchards and homesteads in Rangpur division. Some 80 per cent of the litchi trees in the orchards and homesteads have already bloomed in the region. In greater Rangpur and Dinajpur districts the farmers have been cultivating the Madraji and Bombay varieties of litchis on 70 percent of land and varieties like Bedana, China-3, Golapi in rest of the areas. Abdul Kashem (48), a litchi grower at Santospur village under Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur district told the FE that he has 100 litchi trees in his orchard. He has cultivated China-3 variety of litchi in this season. Over 85 percent litchi trees in his orchard have already bloomed. If the weather remains congenial he is optimistic about achieving a handsome profit this year, he added. Agronomist Anwarul Haque said there might be a satisfactory production of litchis this year in the region if the climatic condition remains conducive. Experts said that favourable condition including early departure of the winter resulted in massive litchi blooming during the current season in Rangpur region.
