BOGRA, Nov 22: Farmers in the northern districts have already started cultivating potato on a large scale. They are hoping for a bumper output, sources said.
According to the sources, nearly 0.270 million hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation in the 16 districts of North Bengal this year. A total of 4.7 million tonnes of potato are expected to be harvested. This would meet more than half of the national demand.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), a target has been fixed to cultivate potato on 0.4 million hectares of land throughout the country. The production target is 7.064 million tonnes. Of them, a production target of 4.48 million tonnes has also been fixed for the northern districts.
But because of high price of potato farmers are cultivating as much land as possible over the target.
The DAE Bogra source said some 52 thousand hectares of land would be brought under potato cultivation in Bogra alone against the target of 42 thousand and 800 hectares.
DAE Bogra Deputy Director Abul Bashar expressed his hope that the department would provide all types of support to the farmers to get a bumper production of potato in the district.
