Bumper production of Jackfruit likely in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, June 8 (BSS): The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said that this year the production of jackfruit in Narsingdi district may exceed the record of the past ten years as a result of favourable climate.
DAE officials talking to the news agency said here that "the current year is 'on year' for jackfruit production and the weather has been favourable at the flowering stage."
There are at present 2.50 million jackfruit trees in the district. Jackfruit growers usually supply 50 to 60 per cent of its production to the capital and other districts after meeting local demands and earn Taka 2.00 billion each year.
Jackfruit has a great economic importance as 20 per cent of the total population of the district is beneficiaries of jackfruit production. More than 1000 families of Shibpur, Belabo and Polash Upazilas of the district are engaged in jackfruit production.
The soil of Narsingdi is favourable for growing jackfruit trees. Earlier, jackfruit growers did not know any modern technique of jackfruit production. However, in recent years the growers started using modern methods in planting jackfruit trees and jackfruit orchards.
