Friday, 28 December 2007

RANGPUR, Dec 27 (BSS): The farmers have engaged their all-out efforts to make the farming of spicy crops successful this year in the northern region of the country.
The early varieties of spicy crops including onion have appeared in plenty in the local markets and the others are growing very well due to a favourable climatic condition in the region this year, officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said here today.
The concerned departments have taken special steps to further increase production of all kinds of spicy crops in all 16 northern districts during the current Rabi season, they added.
The DAE sources said the steps taken included motivational activities among the farmers and rural people, supply of high yielding varieties of seeds and extending technical assistance to the growers under different programmes.
A total of 7,09,407 tonnes of various kinds of spicy crops will be produced from 1,48,206 hectares of land this time in the region, the sources said.
There are bright prospects of increasing onion production further in the region if adequate quantities of high-yielding winter varieties of onion seeds are supplied to the farmers in future.
The DAE sources said a target of producing 3,81,720 tonnes of onion has been fixed from 63,620 hectares during the current Rabi season alone in the region.
Production of all varieties of spicy crops is increasing satisfactorily in recent years as the farmers are becoming more interested in cultivating spicy crops, especially during both seasons of summer and winter to earn high profits.
The DAE, Armed Forces, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation and other organisations under the government's post-flood agro-rehabilitation and other programmes distributed a huge quantity of necessary seeds among the farmers.
Special steps have been taken with a view to encouraging the farmers to increase production of the spicy crops in their lands including homesteads and all-out efforts are now on to achieve self-reliance in spicy crops within a shorter period, the sources said.
