Bumper production of sweet pumpkins in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, May 5: In the shoal areas of the rivers of Nilphamari district the ultra-poor people have succeeded in cultivating sweet pumpkin in huge quantity. Pumpkin cultivation in the sands of the shoals are said to have a particular taste and a bumper production of it brought smile in the face of the farmers. JSKS and some others NGOs are providing technological support along with seed to the farmers. Some NGOs are also providing loan to 280 families of 7 union Parishads of the areas. While contacted coordinator of JSKS Sakawat Hossain said the NGOs are providing seed, fertiliser, insecticide and irrigation facilities to the shoal farmers free of cost. While contacted Deputy Director Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Nilphamari Mamunur Rashid said that sweet pumpkin cultivation would help to reduce poverty of the ultra poor people of the shoal areas of Nilphamari district. Chilli price drops sharply down Another message says: Price of green pepper has came down drastically in Nilphamari district. At present pepper is being sold at Tk 170 per maund in wholesale markets across the district. Sources said sudden fall of price of green pepper has created frustration among the pepper growers of the district as cultivation cost of pepper was nearly Tk 150 per maund excluding its transportation and harvesting cost. Pepper is being extensively cultivated in the district as it is being cultivated in the highlands and the land of the district is very conducive to the cultivation of this spice. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said this seasons cultivation target of green pepper was in 2604 hectares of land and production target was 3646 metric tonnes.
