Bumper spice production expected in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Nov 20: Farmers of Rangpur district are expecting a bumper production of spice this season, sources said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources about 6,384 hectares of land have been brought under spice cultivation in 8 Upazilas of the district this year with a production target of 34, 052 tonnes.
Of the total 1,062 hectares of land have been brought under ginger cultivation and the production target is 13,275 tonnes. About 739 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation while the production target is 2,217 tonnes. A total of 1,896 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation and the production target is 12, 318 tonnes, 862 hectares of land have been brought under garlic cultivation with a production target of 5,172 tonnes, 250 hectares of land have been brought under coriander cultivation and the production target is 308 tonnes, 1,575 hectares of land have been brought under chili cultivation and the production target is 763 tonnes.
Additional Director of DAE Mohsin Ali told the FE that DAE has taken various steps to increase the production of all sorts of spice crops to meet the local demand and reduce dependency on import.
The DAE has also been providing farmers with quality seeds of the spices, inputs, trainings of proper crop diversification, land management and utilisation of latest technologies, he added.
