SYLHET, Oct 23: CPD Distinguished Fellow Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya on Thursday said the bureaucracy had failed to realise the dreams and aspirations of Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus.
"This is why various measures taken by the chief adviser - such as preparing white papers, forming taskforces, and initiating reforms - could not achieve the desired success," he said at a pre-election dialogue organised by the Citizen's Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, an initiative of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), in Sylhet.
Dr Bhattacharya, also the convener of the platform, moderated the dialogue, while Professor Mostafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at the CPD, also spoke, calling for collective efforts to rebuild the country.
Speakers observed that despite the sacrifices made during last year's July movement, much remains to be done to ensure a credible election.
They emphasised that disputes among political parties over trivial issues must be resolved immediately, as any uncertainty surrounding the polls would be detrimental to the nation.
Corruption has increased since the July movement, they said, urging political parties to include specific commitments in their manifestos to combat graft and clearly outline their plans if elected to power.
They also called for a national consensus among parties on key issues before the elections, noting that citizens hold high expectations for both the ruling and opposition camps.
District BNP President Abdul Quaiyum Chowdhury, City Jamaat Nayebe Amir Nurul Islam Babul, and leaders from the NCP, Islami Andolan, CPB and other parties participated in the discussion. Speakers at the event urged political parties to prioritise accountability, good governance, and anti-corruption measures in their manifestos, warning that the nation's future could be at risk if the long-awaited national elections are not held on time.
