Buriganga

Saturday, 5 April 2014

Last week, my brother took me to visit Old Dhaka, Kamrangir Char and Keraniganj. When we crossed a small bridge, sitting on his motor bike, I noticed that we reached Kamrangir Char and the thin cannel was once glorious Buriganga River.
Once it was called the Thames of Bangla. A few minutes later, we reached the centre point of Buriganga where it separated Dhaka city, Keraniganj and Kamrangir Char. The dwellers of all the three sides had been encroaching on the river in such a way that it is now to the guillotine.
Unscrupulous land-grabbers and corrupt politicians are instigating poor people to wrap up its glory in the name of habitation. The most miserable point to mention is that it is used as the central drainage system of the capital city. Women and children were taking bath at different corners in stinky-black polluted water of the Buriganga.
If it continues, one day the name of Buriganga will be history. We should take necessary steps for the survival of the river without any delay. The authority concerned and citizens should come forward to save Buriganga.
