Buriganga River Carnival with 100 boats on Sept 10

River conservationists on Wednesday announced hosting "Buriganga River Carnival" on September 10 to promote conservation efforts to make the country's rivers free of pollution.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh Consortium in collaboration with Buriganga Nadi Morcha (Buriganga River Coalition) will organise the event titled "Buriganga River Carnival: In Pursuit of Pollution Free River".
The carnival will take place by the bank of Buriganga near Muslimbagh Tower Playground at Thota Gudaraghat area of Kamrangirchar.
The announcement was made by the consortium leader Sharif Jamil at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) in the city's Segunbagicha.
Mr Jamil said a fleet of over 100 boats will row from Thota Gudaraghat to Babubazar Bridge and will return to the same place rowing from the opposite side of the river.
He said the purpose of the event is to make people aware of keeping rivers out of pollution and cleaning the riverbeds of polluted rivers like Buriganga.
There are tonnes of examples around the world about reviving polluted and dying river into full brim ones which give hope that one day all the channels of Buriganga may revive, he said.
Former adviser to a caretaker government and human rights activists Dr Sultana Kamal is scheduled to preside over the event where member of the parliament for Dhaka-2 constituency Md Kamrul Islam consented to present as the guest of honour, Mr Jamil informed.
Buriganga Bachao Andolan coordinator Mihir Bishwas, Clean River chief executive Shohag Mohajan, Counterpart International programme specialist Mehedi Hasan, among others were also present at the press conference.
