LALMONIRHAT, Mar 12: The Burimari Express was inaugurated on Tuesday on the Lalmonirhat to Dhaka route. It was a long-awaited demand from the people of Lalmonirhat and its nearby districts.
The dream of nearly two million (20 lakh) people has now come true with a direct train service from Patgram of Lalmonirhat to Dhaka.
Burimari Land Port was launched in 1984 for easy connectivity and tri-nation trade facilities with India, Bhutan and Nepal.
The port's importance is increasing gradually due to various purposes.
Every day, hundreds of tourists, exporters and importers are using this port for travelling to the tree neighbouring countries of Bangladesh.
Thousands of students from India, Nepal and Bhutan are now coming to study in Bangladesh, they mentioned.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared a direct express train service for the people of this area during her visit to Tinbigha corridor in 2011. About 12 years have elapsed since her announcement, but the plan is yet to be implemented.
During a visit, Rail Minister Mujibul Haque said it will start soon but nothing happened. Former rail minister Nurul Islam Sujon voiced the same pledge.
Already, the railway authorities have taken all steps to begin the train service. Now, the train will run from Lalmonirhat to Dhaka to Lalmonirhat.
A shuttle train will carry passengers from Burimari-Lalmonirhat and Lalmonirhat-Burimari every day to connect with the express train.
The train will run six days every week, railway officials said.
Lalmonirhat Railway Divisional Manager Abdus Salam said the train now will run from Lalmonirhat. It will start for Dhaka from Burimari in future.
On the schedule, the train will start for Dhaka from Lalmonirhat at 9:10pm and it will reach Dhaka at 7.00am next day.
