A newlywed woman has succumbed to her burn injuries, allegedly caused by her husband, after fighting for life for several hours at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The victim, Irene Akhter, 24, wife of Asaduzzaman Jhantu of Ispahani Road in Keraniganj, died on Saturday evening. Her mother Taslima Begum said Irene was married off with Jhantu of her neighbourhood barely three weeks back. She said Jhantu started torturing Irene a few days after their marriage suspecting that she talks to other men over mobile phone. On the fateful day, on Saturday morning, Jhantu picked up a quarrel with Irene over it and at one stage he allegedly poured kerosene over her body and set fire to her. Hearing her screams, locals rushed in and admitted Irene to the DMCH's burn unit where she died around 7:30pm. A team of South Keraniganj police arrested Jhantu from Aganagar in Keraniganj Upazila around 8:30pm.
