Bus strike hits normal life in Barisal
Monday, 3 August 2015
An indefinite transport strike has been hitting normal life in Barisal since Sunday. The district Bus owners went on an indefinite strike protesting the strike enforced by CNG-run auto-rickshaw owners and drivers. Altab Hossain, president of Barisal Bus Owners’ Association, announced the strike on Sunday. Earlier in the morning, the drivers of three-wheelers blocked the Dhaka-Barisal highway at Gouranadi for three hours protesting the government ban on the plying of auto-rickshaws on the highways, creating a long tailback. Later, they withdrew the blockade following assurance of the local administration. However, the auto-rickshaw drivers blocked Barisal-Paisarhat road again around 3pm. Following the two-phase road blockade, the bus owners enforced the strike on long routes as well as all inter-district routes demanding security on roads and highways, causing immense sufferings to the passengers, according to a news agency.
