Business and power shortage
Thursday, 26 June 2008
ACCORDING to a recent Asian Development Bank (ADB) report, 64 per cent of industries of different types in Bangladesh have become heavily dependent on generators. This compares with 25 per cent in India and two or three per cent in Thailand and China. This has seriously eroded the competitiveness of Bangladeshi industries as they have to produce much of the power they consume at higher costs.
If it continues like this, many of the industries could go out of business fairly soon. Besides, potential entrepreneurs would stay out of their plans to go for investment out of a concern that they would have no electricity to run their industries.
