Business case mentoring platform for the students

Mehruba Bushra | Thursday, 2 April 2015

The groundbreaking session of Case Doctor - the case mentoring platform for students established by ShARE DU Chapter - was held on March 28, 2015 at  the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka.
Bangladeshi undergrads lag in international business case competitions far behind the US, European, and even other Asian undergrads- both in number of participation and success rate.
But why? Our students are studying almost the same courses as foreign students, following US textbooks, and frequently surfing never-ending resources on internet. Still, with a kin knowledge level, they show drastic lag in depicting wisdom.
To find out what makes the difference, University of Dhaka Chapter of ShARE - the global student think tank, formed by BCG alumni, spanning across 4 continents - looks into the practices of business undergrads of other countries. Their amazing performance is basically the result of their regular case solving, coaching and feedback from experts, and accessing fresh published cases. While in Bangladesh, most students are frightened by the phrase "business case". Some take the maiden steps in first year by approaching to the competitions. But a major part drops out in following years, stumbling at the opening rounds, and getting no chance to know how close to success they were, and what was wrong  with them.
Thus, our students fall behind than foreign undergrads due to the gaps in guidance, practice, feedback, and community of same interest. To bridge these gaps, at Case Doctor - Case Cracking methodology is broken down into detailed parts, and experts will mentor students on those in regular fortnightly sessions. Regular practice will be ensured through cracking one case in each session. Mentors will give feedbacks on their efforts.
Case Doctor is blessed with the support of Prof. Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, the  Dean of Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka. ShARE DU Chapter also thanks Mr. Raad Mozib Lalon, Lecturer at Department of Banking and Insurance, University of Dhaka, for his munificent support behind Case Doctor. The very first session was conducted by Mr. Nahian Rahman, the champion of the renowned case competition ‘Masters of Ideation and Battle of Minds’,  and he is currently serving as MTO (Finance) at BATB.
