Business confidence

Monday, 31 December 2007

IT is very important to understand that on proper functioning of existing businesses and creation of new ones also depend the bread and butter issues of people. The full functioning and growth of trade, industries and services not only provide profits to businessmen but also create the optimum conditions for greater employment of the country's labour force, sustained or increased income levels and hence, progressive improvements in the standard of living.
The flourishment of business is dependent on many factors including internalities or the internal conditions of the business organisations and, externalities, meaning how far the external environment influence business decision. The external factors include among other things, governmental policies, law and order, demand situation for products. While there is the need to give attention to improve the internal conditions by businesses themselves, of greater significance is better externalities to improve the rate of investment in the economy in the present context of Bangladesh.
Recently, a news item quoting the Anticorruption Commission (ACC) alerted the members of the public that businessmen and others were receiving unauthentic notices, not served on them by the ACC. It could only frighten people and build pressure on them to pay money to certain quarters in return for the withdrawal of the fraudulent notices.
It is an example of how panic is spreading in the minds of business people -- rightly or wrongly -- about harsh steps against them by law enforcement bodies. Clearly these fears must be completely removed for businesses to regain confidence and play their part in invigorating the economy.
