Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Industries Mahbub Jamil has called on the business entities in the country to pay due attention to Corporate Social Responsibility activities as part of their responsibility to the society.
He was speaking at a workshop organised on 'Corporate Social Responsibility' at BRAC Centre in the city Monday.
"A lot of sufferings of the poor population of this country can be alleviated through extensive CSR activities," he stated.
Acting British High Commissioner in Bangladesh Duncan Norman and Director of UK Trade and Investment in Bangladesh Kevin Ringham were also present on the occasion.
"CSR is intrinsically linked to the concept of sustainable development; businesses need to integrate the economic, social and environmental impact in their operations," Mahbub observed.
"CSR is not an optional 'add-on' to core activities of business, but about the way in which businesses are managed," he added.
British High Commissioner Duncan Norman said, "CSR is not only the right thing to do morally but also the correct thing to do commercially".
"Today's workshop focuses on ISO 26,000 and although it will not be a regulation, the countries and companies that do adopt such standards will have a marketing advantage," the British envoy affirmed.
Director of BSTI and Director General of the Bangladesh Accreditation Board Liaquat Ali, Director of UK Trade and Investment in Bangladesh Kevin Ringham, Director of CSR Asia, Richard Welford, and Chairman of the Reed Consulting BD Ltd Rodney Reed also spoke in the function.
The workshop organised under the project "Good for Business, Good for Bangladesh" focused on introducing "ISO-26000 -- the CSR Standard" so that Bangladeshi companies could work towards a global standard.
