Businesses with turmoil-induced losses to get BB support : Atiur

FE Report | Monday, 10 February 2014

Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Dr Atiur Rahman said Sunday those businesses which faced losses during last year's political turmoil would get the central bank's support to overcome.
But he warned the habitual loan defaulters would not be entertained.
The governor said the BB will pursue policies to keep the rate of inflation within 7.0 per cent this year.
The inflation rate showed upward trend during the last two months of last year due to political unrest. It reached 7.53 per cent at the end of December last year. The central bank would be cautious and will pursue policies to keep the rate within 7.0 per cent this year, the governor said while speaking at a programme at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy (BBTA) auditorium in the city.
The BBTA organised the programme on the occasion of foundation training course for 2nd batch, 2013 and inauguration of 2014's first batch of newly- appointed assistant directors.
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor SK Sur Chowdhury, BBTA Executive Director Ataur Rahman and course director Kazi Azizul Haque also spoke at the event.
Dr Atiur said the establishment of credit discipline is an important strategy and instrument for controlling inflation. "It's possible to contain inflation by reducing credit growth to a reasonable level against nominal GDP growth."
The governor said the Bangladesh Bank is going to recruit 250 new officials, more than last year's recruitment to strengthen the central bank.
Dr. Atiur said the economy of the country expanded and deepened in last five years.
By this period, the number of banks increased from 48 to 56, branches of banks rose from 6,886 to 8,560, the number of depositors went up by 63 per cent and savings increased by 134 per cent, he said.
Mr SK Sur Chowdhury said there is no alternative of creating skilled human resources for development of a country.
He urged the newly-appointed officers to work in the bank with dedication, competitiveness and honesty.
He said the central bank would take steps to strengthen the BBTA for world-class training.
The governor distributed certificates to 57 new assistant directors who completed training.
