Butterfly fair at JU held

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Dec 4:The Department of Zoology of Jahangirnagar University (JU) organised a day-long Butterfly Fair Friday with the motto "Urley Akashey Projapoti, Prokriti Paye Notun Goti" (flying butterflies give Nature a new life) here at the campus.
Vice-Chancellor of JU Prof Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir inaugurated the fair as chief guest while Prof Dr Mohammad Moniruzzaman, Pro-VC (education), Prof Dr Farhad Hossain, Pro-VC (administration), Prof Dr Nasir Uddin, treasurer, Mr Abdul Muqeed Majumdar, Director, Impress Telefilm Ltd, and Chhanel-I were also addressed the fair as special guests.
About 100 species of butterfly are being exhibited in the auditorium and botanical garden in the fair.
Among the butterflies displayed are Plain Tiger, Common Crow, Plum Judy, Dingy Bushbrown, Common Duffer, Ape Fly, Pea Blue, Tiny Grass Blue, Oak Blue, Common Sailor, Common Rose, Blue Mormon, Striped Albatross, Mottled Emigrant, Common Grass Yellow, Monkey Puzzle, Blue Pansy, Painted Lady and so on.
Sources said, of 100 species of butterflies 61 species are reported as new to the list of butterflies in Bangladesh and assumed that many more species are yet to be discovered.
The fair includes inauguration ceremony, drawing competition for children on nature and butterfly, photography competition and exhibition, live butterfly display, documentary on butterfly and prize giving.
Thousands of former and current students of the university and visitors from countryside and overseas thronged the campus to enjoy the fair with their near and dear.
The VC of JU told the FE that the fair mainly assists to promote the importance of butterflies for maintaining the ecological balance and create awareness about the importance of preserving them.
Dr Monower Hosseen, convener of the fair also chairman of Zoology Department, said that the fair focusing different aspects of raising butterflies and for emphasising the importance for maintenance of the ecological balance of the environment.
