CA asks bureaucrats to maintain utmost neutrality

Tuesday, 19 August 2008

Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed asked Monday the country's top civil bureaucrats to extend total cooperation to holding free, fair and neutral general elections by maintaining utmost neutrality and rising above all influence, fear and intimidation, reports UNB.

Giving the directive while addressing the secretaries of all ministries and divisions, he expressed the confidence that his government would be successful in presenting the nation a free, fair and credible election for transferring power to the elected government.

"A free, fair and neutral election is going to be held in December this year. I hope this election will be peaceful, festive and delightful. We all will go to the voting centres without fear to vote for electing the candidate of our choice," Dr Fakhruddin told the top bosses of the civil administration at the Cabinet Division conference room.

"You'll also have to play role in ensuring the environment so that voters can go to the polling centres and cast their vote in free mind and without fear," he said.

In his introductory speech, the Chief Adviser (CA) further said the civil administrators would also have to extend cooperation in sustaining the caretaker government's activities made in the last 19 months, including policies and guidelines for strengthening the base of democracy.

He said it was the responsibility of all including government officials and employees to ensure that voters could go to the polling centres and cast votes without fear to choose their candidates, as the government was responsible to provide all out cooperation to the Election Commission (EC).

Dr Fakhruddin mentioned that the elections to four city corporations and nine municipalities on August 4 were held very fairly with large percentage of voter turnout. The head of the interim administration said since assuming office, the government was working for the last 19 months towards a free and fair election to transfer power to the elected government and the election was about to come.

The EC would finalise the voter list with photographs of all regions of the country sometime in October, he said.

The Chief Adviser during his nearly an hour's introductory speech touched upon food security, income support to fixed and low income group, effective implementation of ADP, economic growth, law and order, citizen services, posting and promotion of government officials and application of IT by government officials.
