Chief Adviser (CA) of the caretaker government Fakhruddin Ahmed Saturday urged the members of President's Guard Regiment (PGR) to remain alert during VVIPs' mass contact and their public involvement alongside ensuring their highest security, reports UNB/ bdnews24.com.
"So, every member of this regiment would have to be strong, devoted and responsible on one hand and gentle and sober on the other. Remain active to uphold the reputation and public confidence you have already earned in this regard."
Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said this while speaking at a function at Shaheed Captain Hafiz hall at the PGR headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment, commemorating the 33rd founding anniversary of the President Guard Regiment.
The Chief Adviser promised efforts to modernise the regiment and said: "We will continue our effort for the development of the regiment and welfare of its members."
Earlier, Chief Adviser Fakhruddin, flanked by Army Chief Gen Moeen U Ahmed and PGR Commandant Brig Gen Ali Murtoza Khan, cut a cake marking the PGR founding anniversary.
Naval Chief Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam, Air Force Chief Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman and senior civil and military officials were present at the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said the responsibility of ensuring security of VVIPs, including the head of the state and the head of the government, has gradually become complex and challenging against the backdrop of national and international aspects.
"The matter of ensuring security of VVIPs today has become multidimensional," the CA said urging the guards to remain always active in keeping modern equipment alongside improving their professional standard and efficiency.
"So, give special importance to regular training and tough practice and priority to attain the knowledge of the latest technologies and their applications. Also keep close contact and maintain proper coordination in work and mutual cooperation with other security agencies," he told the PGR members.
Dr Fakhruddin assured that the government would do everything possible for the modernisation of the force, and continue its efforts for development of the regiment and welfare of its members.
"Ensuring the security of VVIPs and important state functions is not an easy task," he said adding that keeping sharp vigilance, spending sleepless nights, coping with an adverse environment and doing hard work are its regular companions.
"I believe these qualities are there in every member of the regiment built with smart members of the army."
The CA recalled with respect those heroes of the PGR members who embraced martyrdom while performing their duties, and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
In a statement, the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate said the programme had started with the hoisting of the regimental flag. The PGR was established in 1975.
