FE Report
Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed termed Wednesday the record 33-million tonnes of annual foodgrain output in the country one of the major achievements during the regime of his interim administration.
"Achieving an output of over 33 million tonnes of foodgrains in a year is a milestone in the country's foodgrain production," Dr. Fakhruddin said during a courtesy meet with a select group of members of the media at his office in the city.
The CA further said the caretaker administration has also made a stock of 1.35-million tonnes of foodgrains, the highest in the history of Bangladesh.
"The farmers of Bangladesh will be able to maintain the current growth trend in production of food-grains if we can provide minimum support to them," he told newsmen.
Among other things, he also termed the political parties' registration with the Election Commission (EC) another significant achievement in the country's political arena.
When asked to comment, Dr. Fakhruddin said, " I have got the opportunity to serve the people of Bangladesh, for which I am grateful to Almighty Allah."
"I tried to discharge sincerely whatever responsibility was devolved on me," he went on.
The CA also said his present aim is to hold a free and fair election.
Responding to a query on whether he has any plan to take up any new responsibility after handing over power to an elected government, he said, "Not yet. I am planning to go for a long vacation after the power handover."
When asked to comment on whether he sees any major challenge for ratification of his government's activities by the next elected government, Dr. Fakhruddin said, "I don't think so. The ratifications of our ordinances are necessary for the sake of continuation of the government.
"The government of Bangladesh had to ratify even the activities of the then Pakistani government," he added.
He, however, praised the media men for playing positive roles in helping the present government carry out its responsibilities properly.
CA's Press Secretary Fahim Monaim, among other senior officials, was also present at the informal meeting.
