Sunday, 30 December 2007

Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed Saturday called upon the Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) to pay heed to the call of their motherland and help materialise the cherished development goals of the nation through making concerted efforts, reports BSS.
He made the call while addressing as the chief guest the concluding session of the three-day First Non-Resident Bangladeshi Conference-2007 organised by the Scholars Bangladesh, a platform of non-resident Bangladeshi scholars and professionals, at a city hotel.
Terming the non-resident Bangladeshis as patriots like other Bangladeshis, Fakhruddin said they had come all the way from various corners of the globe to participate in this 'groundbreaking' initiative.
He said, "Our common goal is to transform our motherland into a middle-income group country by the year 2021, coinciding with 50 years of Bangladesh's independence. We can achieve this objective only with the support and cooperation of all our citizens living at home and abroad."
Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and Acting Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury spoke at the session as special guests.
Among others, Michigan State Senator Hansen Clerk, Director of BRAC in the United Kingdom (UK) Chandra Kabir and chief executive officer (CEO) of Scholars Bangladesh Dilara Afroz also spoke on the occasion.
Eminent jurist and adviser of the organisation Dr Kamal Hossain gave vote of thanks at the session.
Describing the NRBs working in various countries of the world as the pride of the nation, he said remittances sent by them were making significant contribution to the growth of the country.
"There exists much room to pool their knowledge, skills, expertise and experiences to support the socio-economic development of Bangladesh," he added.
He said, "Our country is beset with many problems as well as a dearth of resources. We have to face calamities and whims of nature constantly, but ultimately we overcome these with our resilience and perseverance," he added.
Fakhruddin expressed the hope that this conference would help the nation overcome many future challenges by building a bridge between the country's scholars and entrepreneurs at home and abroad.
Meanwhile, the NRBs expressed their utmost eagerness to make the best use of their expertise and investment to enhance the skill of the country's manpower and improve the quality of the education and transport systems.
The enthusiasm came on the last day of the first ever three- day NBR conference. Four seminars on various development issues were held during the conference.
The seminars dealt with the issues of upgrading the skill of Bangladeshi workforce to international standard, developing a sustainable transportation system, improvement of education and creating a congenial atmosphere for investment.
Mohammad K Haq, Vice-president, International Partnership, CWI Institute of Canada said, Bangladesh must educate and build its citizens to become worthy of competing in the global economy.
"NRBs could offer their expertise and experience to help develop the skills of county's manpower as per international standard," he said while presenting the keynote paper at a seminar. He was presenting key-note paper at a seminar titled 'Skill Development of Bangladesh For Global Market Place' where he also gave a Bangladesh model of skill development where NRBs could assist.
Eminent Economist Atiur Rahman urged the NRBs to set up a skill development centre in the city where they could volunteer their expertise for developing the skills of the Bangladeshi workforce of international standard.
"You need to come forward to help your country, from where you originated on your own way rather blaming the government for not facilitating NRBs",
In another seminar on development of sustainable transportation systems for the Dhaka city, the NRB experts suggested making an integrated policy and planning on land use and transportation.
Traffic engineering and transportation planning specialist of Washington DC, Habib Shaheen Tarafdar and Development Budget Adviser of the Ministry of Finance of Afghanistan Abu Reza dwelt on various aspects of traffic management.
They underlined the need for developing a long-term inter-model transportation system by well integrating the non-motorised, motorised and mass transportation moods.
NBRs, who are working in the transport sector in different countries, could come forward with their experience and expertise to help formulate a appropriate policy as higher technologies, appropriate -decision making tools and innovative financial strategies were required to develop a transportation system.
