CAB for movement against junk food

Leaders of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Saturday called upon the citizens to create a movement for keeping children away from junk food and soft drinks to build healthy generations, reports BSS.
Creating mass awareness against junk food side by side, we need to raise voice to stop marketing of unhealthy food to children, they said at a discussion meting in the city.
Referring to the food-ingredients, they said, the fast foods like burger, chips, ice cream, different chocolate have no adequate protein, vitamin and fiber whereas having excessive salt, sugar and fat which are risk factors for heart diseases, blood pressure and cancer.
The meeting revealed that the multi national companies of the world expended US $12.7 billion for marketing their junk foods and soft drinks in 2006 while the total five-year budget of Bangladesh health sector is only US $ 3.2 billion.
The discussion meeting titled 'Junk Food Generation: Campaign to stop marketing of unhealthy food to children' was organised by the CAB at CIRDAP auditorium marking the 'World Consumers Right Day' which was observed across the world Saturday.
CAB president and executive editor of daily Janakantha Borhan Ahmed chaired the meeting while its general secretary Qazi Farook and vice president Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan gave welcome speech and vote of thanks respectively.
