Cabinet adopts condolence reference

The Cabinet adopted Monday a condolence reference over the death of West Bengal's longest serving Chief Minister Jyoti Basu.
The condolence reference was taken following a directive from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who presided over the 53rd meeting of the Cabinet, reports UNB.
Briefing newsmen at the PID conference room, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad said the Cabinet expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of veteran politician Jyoti Basu.
Mr Basu will be always remembered as a legendary left politician in the politics of the Sub-continent through his life-long struggle and outstanding sacrifices, the condolence reference stated.
It stated: "At the demise of Jyoti Basu, Bangladesh has lost a long-time well-wisher."
The Cabinet in its reference also recalled with deep gratitude that Jyoti Basu, during the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh, had arranged shelter and food for 10 million people of Bangladesh who took refuge in the Indian state of West Bengal.
"People of Bangladesh will ever recall Jyoti Basu's contribution to ensure Bangladesh's fair share of water in the Bangladesh-India Ganga Water Sharing Treaty," the reference mentioned.
The Cabinet also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Jyoti Basu and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
