Thursday, 10 September 2009

The cabinet approved in principle proposed Vested Property Return (Amendment) Act 2009 and Bangladesh High-tech Park Authority Act 2009, as the council of ministers dealt with a number of legislative matters in its special meeting Wednesday, reports UNB.
The proposed Mobile Court Act 2009 was also given final approval at the 38th meeting of the council of ministers held at Prime Minister's Office (PMO) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing newsmen after the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the vested property act was introduced way back in 1969 in the Pakistan times as Enemy Property Act which was renamed Vested Property Act in 1974.
The law was originally made by the then Pakistan government to deal with the property of the Hindu community people, particularly landlords, who had migrated to India following the 1947 partition.
In 2001, the act was again renamed Vested Property Return Act and some amendments were brought in the law in 2002. The last caretaker government promulgated the Vested Property Return Ordinance in 2008.
The second Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (2009-11) titled 'Steps Toward Change: National Strategy for Accelerated Poverty Reduction' was also placed in the cabinet, but it was decided to be presented in the next cabinet meeting for approval.
