Cabinet approves draft Non-formal Edn Act

FE Report | Tuesday, 24 June 2014

The cabinet approved Monday the draft Non-formal Education Act, 2014 with view to ensuring primary education for all with the provision of six months in jail and Tk 60,000 fine for breaking the proposed law.
"The proposed law will prevent dropout as well as ensure primary education for all," cabinet secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told the media after regular cabinet meeting at the conference room of the cabinet division at Bangladesh Secretariat on the day.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at the cabinet room of the Jatiya Sangsad.
The cabinet secretary said under the proposed law, a Non-formal Education Department will be established for ensuring primary education to all.
The department will provide education for the children who are deprived of formal education due to dropouts or older persons who could not get formal education within their age of 14.
Mr Bhuiyan said under the proposed law a board will be constituted where a chairman will look after its activities.
He said the priority of the government is to ensure education for every citizen since a huge number of children remain out of the formal education due to dropout and other reasons though the government is implementing a massive programme for the non-formal education.
The cabinet also approved the draft deal on "Agreement between the European Union and the People's Republic of Bangladesh on certain aspects of air services" aiming to strengthen cooperation on aviation services with the EU countries. Bangladesh now has separate agreement with eight EU countries.
It also approved the draft deal on "Agreement between the Bangladesh Military Museum, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Kuwait House of National Works, Government of the State of Kuwait for Twinning and Cooperation and Exchange of Wards".
"The agreement would empower the museums for exchange of information and experience as well as open wards in each others' museum to show their military exhibits," the cabinet secretary said.
