Cabinet purchase body approves 0.1m tonnes of wheat import

The government will import 200,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser ahead of the Aman cultivation season, reports UNB.

The Advisory Committee on Public Purchase Thursday approved a number of procurement proposals in this regard.

Besides, the government will import 100,000 tonnes of wheat costing Tk 2.92 billion (at US$ 397 per tonne) to meet the domestic demand.

The state-owned Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will import the entire quantity of urea fertiliser as per proposals placed by the industries ministry.

Of these, 50,000 tonnes of bagged urea will be imported through Chittagong port at a cost of Tk 3.09 billion (at US$ 802.10-852.40 per tonne), while another 50,000 tonnes of granular urea fertiliser imported through the same port at a cost of Tk 3.25 tonne (at $ 933.20-$944.20 per tonne).

Some 50,000 tonnes of bagged urea will be imported through Mongla port at a cost of Tk 3.17 (at $ 909.40-919.92 per tonne), while 50,000 tonnes of granular urea fertiliser imported through the same port at a cost of Tk 3.31 billion (at $ 944.20-960.20 per tonne).

The Cabinet Purchase Committee also approved a proposal under which the BCIC will import 15,000 tonnes of rock phosphate for use in its fertiliser factories.

After the meeting, Finance Adviser Dr Mirza Azizul Islam told reporters that the government has moved to import fertiliser in advance against the backdrop of upward price trend on the international market.
