Friday, 19 December 2008
Ahead of the upcoming polls, no distributors and utility-service providers can go for marketing, circulating and broadcasting their own programmes through video, VCD and DVD in the country, according to government's prohibitory order, reports UNB.
The restrictions were imposed under the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 3(2), said an official announcement Thursday.
An Election Commission (EC) directive on the campaign of the candidates on electronic media said, "It is also necessary to ensure that the cable operators do not make any election campaign on any channels using their medium."
If any cable operators conduct any election campaign for or against any candidate violating the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 3(2) and the EC directive, the transgressors would be imprisoned for maximum two years, fined Tk 50,000 to 1.0 lakh, or punished in both terms along with cancellation of the licence, the government warned.
All concerned have been requested to strictly go by the provisions of the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006.
