The theft of a portion of underground telephone cables connecting Niketon, Tejgaon and Gulshan areas of Dhaka city have caused as many as 3,500 telephones to go dead since Thursday morning, Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) has said. In a media statement, the BTCL said it had taken steps to repair 5,100 pairs of cables damaged during the theft. It hopes to restore services within four to five days. In March this year, around 2,500 land phones went out of service at Dhaka’s Assad Gate locality as a number of primary cables had snapped during a WASA repair work, according to bdnews24.com.
