Cairn to install compressor at Sangu

British Cairn Energy and its partners have initiated the installation of a gas compressor at a cost of US$6.0 million at Sangu to maintain the present volume of gas supply from the country's lone offshore gas field near Chittagong coastal belt.
"Construction and site preparations are well underway with 50 local contract workers involved in preparing the site for the arrival of the two 30-tonne compressor packages," Managing Director of Cairn Energy Companies in Bangladesh Phil Dolan said Monday.
The compressor, which is being built in Singapore, will be ready for shipment by April this year, the Cairn top brass in Bangladesh said.
Cairn and its joint venture partners will install the compressor in the Sangu gas field by July 2009.
"The gas compression project will help to maintain the current gas production level and feed it to the Chittagong market," Dolan added.
Petrobangla in September last approved the $6.0 million investment proposal of Cairn and its partners to install the compressor in Sangu gas field to ensure that the current gas supply does not decrease anymore until 2011.
With this investment a well intervention programme will also be carried out in Sangu gas field, a Petrobangla official said.
Cairn and its partners, however, completed three well intervention programmes recently to help increase gas production.
The third well intervention programme was carried out on well nos 1 and 9 in the Sangu field, resulting in an initial 60 per cent augmentation in production from Sangu.
Sangu is now producing about 50-55 mmcfd.
Gas production from Sangu had slumped as low as around 35 mmcfd from its average production of 180 mmcfd during 2006, seriously affecting the supply situation across Chittagong.
Despite setting up of the compressor at Sangu, production from the country's lone offshore field would not increase but the present production level can be continued, a Cairn official said.
It will help arrest the downward trend of gas supply and maintain steady supply from Sangu until 2011 before its economic life ends in 2012, the official said.
"The Sangu gas field in the Bay of Bengal has produced in excess of 450 billion cubic feet (Bcf) since production started in 1998," Cairn chief in Bangladesh Phil Dolan said.
Sangu was one of the largest discoveries in the 1990's when Cairn was one of the first international companies to start operating in Bangladesh.
To date, Cairn and its JV partners have invested approximately $1.0 billion in the country.
Apart from Cairn, the joint partners in the Sangu field are Australian Santos and US-based HBR Energy.
