Call for incorporating migration governance in 5-year plan

Monday, 7 June 2010

Speakers at a policy dialogue said migration will be declared as a thrust sector in the sixth five-year plan.
The digalogue on "Incorporating Migration Governance in the 6th Five-Year Plan" organised by Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) of Dhaka University (DU) was held at its Senate Bhaban recently, according to a press release.
Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Engr Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain was present as the chief guest while Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Mohammad Israfil Alam was the special guest.
Dr Tasneem Siddiqui in her keynote presentation recommended major restructuring of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment. She recommended five departments be created that will include (a), recruitment and regulation, (b) welfare, (c) labour attaché, (d) Non-resident Bangladeshis, and (e) research and policy. She also suggested the creation of new directorate for promoting the rights and welfare of migrants.
The Minister observed that, because of its complex nature, interventions relating to migration must be multi sectoral. This is to be borne in mind while incorporating the issue of migration governance in the sixth five-year plan.
