Speakers at a discussion meeting Wednesday called for raising allocation in programmes for women under the Annual Development Programme (ADP).
They also informed the meeting that the budgetary allocation under the ADP for women continued to decline over the last nine years.
They were speaking at the discussion on 'Gender Sensitive Budget Implementation - Monitoring' at the city's CIRDAP (Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific) auditorium. The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
The speakers in the meeting put forth some suggestions to the government including preparing gender budget by each ministry as well as taking necessary steps to implement it and continuing the existing incentives for women education sector in the upcoming budget for fiscal year (FY) 2014-15.
Research director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Binayak Sen said the budgetary allocation for the widows is very insufficient according to their needs.
The government should increase the allocation so that they can develop themselves economically.
He also said to prevent child marriage the government should help the poor families financially. The rate of child marriage increases because of the dowry system.
