Call to build Dhaka as livable city for all
Thursday, 18 December 2008
Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Wednesday said the housing problem, traffic congestion and environmental pollution in capital would be reduced to a large extent in next 15 years with the implementation of the short, long and mid-term plans and programmes taken by the caretaker government, reports UNB.
It would also be easier to get citizen service and Dhaka would become more habitable for all, he said.
The head of the caretaker government expressed the views while laying the foundation for the construction of Kuril Flyover, under the Purabachal New Town Project, at Kuril intersection - the connecting point of Pragoti Sarani (Bishwa Road and Airport Road in the city).
Purbachal New Town project is comprised of some parts of Gazipur and Narayanganj districts.
The 3.1 kilometre-long and 14.5 metre-high one-way Kuril flyover will be implemented by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) with target of completion on December 2010 with RAJUK's own funds. The width of the flyover will be 6.7-9.2 metres with 20 traffic directions.
The objectives of constructing the flyover are to resolve traffic congestion at Kuril intersection, remove problems due to Kuril level crossing, development of communications of people of eastern and northern parts and development of communication for Purbachal dwellers in the future with the capital.
The Housing and Public Works Ministry is the implementing agency of the project.
A power point presentation on Kuril Flyover was made at the foundation-laying ceremony.
The CA formally unveiled the plaque of the foundation stone of the flyover.
Addressing the function, the CA said his government had adopted short, mid, and long-term plans and projects to make Dhaka lively and more habitable.
