Call to curb price rise of essentials in Ctg mkts

CHITTAGONG, Oct 20 : People in the port city have urged the government to curb the abnormal rise in prices of essential commodities, as no effective steps have so far been taken by the concerned authority in this connection.
According to sources, prices of all essential commodities are still moving upwards in the city markets.
Prices of onion, flour, powder-milk and vegetables are increasing at an alarming rate in the city kitchen markets everyday and that have surpassed all the previous magnitudes.
Sources said, following the suspension of onion export by neighbouring India, price of onion has recently increased by Tk 10 per kilogram (kg) in local markets.
In different city markets such as Chawkbazar, Bahaddarhat, Kazirdewribazar Karnaphuly market, onion price has jumped to Tk 50 from its previous price at Tk 32 per kg only a week back.
On the other hand, price of rice has also increased by Tk 1.0 to Tk 2.0 per kg. Prices of 'ata' and flour are also moving upwards. Within a gap of a few days, prices of 'ata' and flour have increased to Tk 36 and Tk 38 respectively in the city markets. Price of powder milk is also increasing everyday.
Prices of vegetable items have already gone beyond the buying capacity of the common people as most of the vegetable items are now being sold at exorbitant prices.
