Call to curb rising prices of construction materials

A delegation of the Bangladesh Association of Construction Industry (BACI) has urged the government to take an urgent step to control the rising prices of construction materials.
The request was made when the BACI team, led by its President Engineer Syed Mosharraf Hossain, called on Adviser for Finance and Planning Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam at the Planning Commission at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city Wednesday, said a press release.
The delegation included BACI Vice President Engineer Nazrul Islam, Adviser Engineer Aminul Islam, members Engineer Maqsudul Haque S Masud and Engineer Mustafizur Rahman, and Secretary General GA Khan.
The Adviser was assisted by Zafar Ahmad Chowdhury, secretary of the Ministry of Planning, Md Abdul Majeed, chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR), and Mohammad Alam, member (VAT), NBR, at the meeting.
The BACI delegation appraised the Adviser of the extreme price-hike of the construction materials, such as steel, rebars, etc. which has severely been affecting the construction costs of the government development projects.
The BACI members asked the Adviser to urgently look into the matter and allow for recourse to price escalation clause within the framework of the Standard Tender Document under PPR-2003, through re-activation of the relevant clause
The Adviser gave the assurance that he would discuss the matter with the other relevant line ministries.
The BACI members also informed the Adviser about the other activities and programmes of BACI for development of the country's construction industry sector.
