Call to enforce national building code to ensure fire safety, cut casualties

FE REPORT | Thursday, 26 January 2023

Speakers at a programme on Monday called for proper enforcement of the Bangladesh National Building Code to ensure fire safety and reduce fire-related casualties across the country.
They also urged the government regulatory authorities to monitor the safety compliances.
They made the calls at a session on "Fire-Safe Glazing for Architecture" at a hotel in the city. Grasshopper Group and FG Glass jointly organised the event to launch Schott fire safety glazing in Bangladesh market, according to a statement.
Addressing the event, President of Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) Professor Dr Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed said they witnessed collapses of many buildings like Rana Plaza and fire incidents like those in Tazreen Fashion, FR Tower, Nimtoli, and Chhurihatta.
"The incidents occurred as the building code and other rules were not followed. Each regulator body failed to monitor use of the buildings and factories," he was quoted as saying in the statement.
He stressed the need for strict monitoring of all related safety compliances of the buildings by all government regulatory bodies, and local government departments for the sake of next generation.
Tariq Kachwala, director of FG Glass, delivered welcome speech while Helmut
Kugelmann, Director Sales Fire Resistant and Security Glazing, SCHOTT, presented
keynote on glass and glass ceramics.
Vice President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Shahidullah Azim said fire safety in the country's readymade garment industry has improved significantly after the industrial incidents including Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashion.
He also added that Bangladesh now has the highest number of 170 green factories certified by USGBC.
President of Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB)
Zahir Uddin Babar said they are facing a number of problems in importing safety equipment.
Managing Director of Grasshopper Group Mahmudur Rashid also spoke.
