Call to ensure transparent public procurement

RAJSHAHI, Jan 10 (BSS): Transparent and accountable public procurement has become an urgent need for the best uses of the public money together with proper implementation of the uplift programs.
Speakers made this observation while addressing the opening day's sessions of a two-day journalists training titled "Public Procurement Reform Project-2: Social Awareness and Communication Activities" organized by Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP) at Hotel Nice International here today.
Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Division of Planning Ministry under its Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) supported the training where some 28 journalists of print and electronics media and news agencies are taking part.
Project Consultant Engineer Afil Uddin conducted the training sessions as focal person while BCCP Training Manager Badal Halder and Senior Program Officer Marufa Khanom spoke as the resource persons.
The speakers stated that more than Taka 25,000 crore is spent for the public procurement purposes every year so there is no alternative to make the procurement process translucent. They mentioned that the present government has taken steps to make the tender and procurement process computerized for preventing corruption and different other anomalies in this regard.
In this context, they said the journalists have a vital role to play for successful implementation of the public procurement rules and community support is very essential for the purpose.
Taking part in the discussion the attending journalists said most of the related corruptions and irregularities could be removed upon successful implementation of the online system.
