Call to expedite campaign on violence against women

RAJSHAHI, Dec 18 (BSS): Speakers at a post-rally discussion here Sunday emphasized the need for creating mass-awareness towards prevention of repression and violence against women for restoring their legitimate rights. They said freeing the womenfolk from all sorts of oppression and violence has become an urgent need for making them aware about the nation- building process as they constitute half of the total population. They were addressing the inaugural ceremony of a three-day 'Women Repression Prevention Campaign Fair-2011' organized by District Information Office (DIO) at Shishu Academy premises. District Administration and UNFPA jointly supported the fair being held under the project titled "Joint Programme to Address Violence Against Women". DIO Deputy Director Farhad Hossain described the project activities and aims and objectives of the fair. Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Swapan Kumar Roy addressed the session as the chief guest while local unit chairman of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Begum Morjina Parween, BLAST Coordinator Advocate Abdus Samad and District Children Affairs Officer Mosharraf Hossain Prodhan also spoke on the occasion with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Subol Bose Moni in the chair. The speakers said concerned effort of both government and non-government organization has become indispensable to expedite the campaign against violence against women. They stated that collective effort together with a changing mindset could be the effective means of containing violence against them.
