SIRAJGANJ, July 3: Local people have made a call to the government to make the BSCIC area in the district pollution-free as stagnant toxic water released from different factory units in the BSCIC compound has been polluting environment in the industrial area for long, causing untold suffering to local people, sources said.
Besides, the atmosphere of the industrial estate has become dirty and unhygienic due to lack of treatment plants and proper drainage system, it was alleged.
The situation has deteriorated as some industrial units, including yarn dyeing and processing units, cement mills and salt industries, release polluted water to the compound without using treatment plants everyday.
Official sources said the government set up the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) in 1985 on 10 acres of land, three kilometres away from Sirajganj town, with a total of 10 industrial units.
But, the authorities concerned did not take necessary steps to install treatment plants and proper drainage system during setting up of the mills.
Under the circumstances, local people have urged the government to take immediate action in this connection.
