Call to raise output in country's sugar mills

GAIBANDHA, Dec 7 (BSS): Adviser for Industries Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury has asked the authorities of local sugar mills to increase their production in the country to reduce the dependence on imported sugar.
In this respect, she has suggested the farmers to grow high-yielding varieties of sugarcane with proper care to help raise sugar production in the country.
The adviser made the call while inaugurating the sugarcane crushing at Rangpur Sugar Mill here Friday. The mill re-opened its production after three years' stoppage, an official handout said.
She said the government has taken steps to re-start the sugar mill in the greater interest of the people in the Monga-hit region.
"Economic activities of the people would be further strengthened with the re-start of this mill," she observed.
The adviser urged all concerned to work unitedly and more sincerely for achieving the production target fixed for the mill.
The mill authorities fixed this season's production target at 5,075 tonnes by crushing 70,000 tonnes of sugarcane," the handout said.
Chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) Kabir Mohd Ashraf Alam and Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mohammad Anwarul Hakim, among others, also addressed the function with Managing Director of the mill Shibendra Nath Sarkar in the chair.
