Saturday, 16 May 2015

RAJSHAHI, May 15 (BSS):  Speakers at a seminar in Rajshahi called for removing the existing problems relating to live fish supply and transportation from Rajshahi to different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka.
They stated that the good practice should be promoted throughout the country as people in markets and other commercial hubs are concerned over frequent use of formalin.
Department of Fish (DoF) organised the daylong divisional level seminar on "Present Condition, Problems and Prospect of Safe Carp Live Fish Supplying and Transportation" held at the conference hall of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) yesterday.
Director of DoF MI Golder and Director of Fishermen Registration and ID Card Distribution Project Arifur Rahman Tarafder addressed the discussion as the chief and special guests respectively with Mahbub Ul Alam, Divisional Deputy Director of DoF, in the chair.
District Fisheries Officers Golam Rabbani, Suvash Chandra, fish farmers Abdul Halim and Jakir Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
The speakers said live fish, especially the major carps, are sold at Rajshahi markets and supplied to different parts of the country over the years.
Taking part in open and group discussions, the fish farmers and traders mentioned that they face manifold problems including harassment at different checkpoints during transportation and ultimately incur loss.
They said the fish-laden trucks should be given priority and the policy planners should come forward to facilitate the process.
