Call to reschedule BGMEA poll

FE Report | Thursday, 17 March 2011

FE Report
A section of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has demanded rescheduling of the upcoming election to the association as what it said the present voter list contains at least 25 per cent fake voters. "We are for a free and fair election to BGMEA but it is not possible with the existing voter roll as it includes at least 25 per cent false voters," Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, a president candidate from the panel of Forum for the BGMEA election scheduled to be held on March 20, told a press conference at a city hotel Wednesday. Mr Parvez, former president of the country's apex apparel makers' association, also sought the Prime Minister's intervention to stop the March 20 poll. We want to go for the election in a reasonable time after the election commission in this connection completes all preparation, including making a clear voter list, said Mr Parvez. A total of 3,259 voters will cast their votes to elect 27 directors in the election. At least 54 candidates from two panels-- Forum and Sammilito Parishad- are set to vie for the poll. The elected directors will select one president and four vice presidents to run the association for a two-year term. Of the vice presidents, one is elected from the Chittagong region and the remaining three from the Dhaka region. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Forum coordinator Benzir Ahmed and director candidates from the panel MA Salam, Afzal Quraishi and MA Shahid were present at the press conference.
