CHITTAGONG, Aug 28: The businesses at Chaktai-Khatunganj, which is regarded as the traditional business centre of the port city, is under threat due to utter negligence of the government, sources said.
Since the Mughal period, Chittagong has gained reputation in the field of trade and commerce with the arrival of tourists and traders from home and abroad centring Chaktai-Khatunganj, which is a big market of all kinds of essential products including pepper, spice, sugar, rice, pulse, edible oil, clothes, cosmetics and machinery accessories, the sources added.
Export-import business of the country was also executed from this business centre in the past.
In course of time, Chaktai-Khatunganj has started losing its glory gradually due mainly to the government's capital-based business policy, dominance of dishonest businessmen, filling of Chaktai canal, installation of unplanned establishments, etc.
It is unfortunate that while the world is heading toward free-market economy, the future of Chaktai-Khatunganj business hub, which is bearing the heritage of hundreds of years, is under threat.
In the circumstances, the business people of the area have urged the government to take some realistic steps to save the business hub from ruin.
