Poribesh Banchao Andolon (PABA), an organisation of environmental activists, Friday urged the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to re-excavate the Rupnagar-Duaripara canal and save it from illegal occupation, reports BSS.
At a protest meeting, the PABA leaders said a vested quarters has been out to grab the Rupnagar-Duaripara canal in the city's Pallabi area, a PABA press release said.
A large number of local people took to the street on Rupnagar Road No 20 and 21 to press home their demand to retrieve the canal from the hands of land grabbers.
They said encroachment of the canal has created a disastrous situation for 300,000 people in the Rupnagar residential area and also its surrounding areas including Arambag, Arifabad and Pallabi.
The vested quarters built makeshift houses on the canal, obstructing the drainage outlets and creating severe water logging in the area even during moderate rainfall, the press release said.
Addressing the protest meeting, PABA chairman Abu Naser Khan said the Rupnagar-Duaripara canal should be rescued from the grabbers to protect the area in particular and the city as a whole.
He urged the government to take stern action against the illegal encroachers of land, water bodies, and low-lying areas of the city.
