Call to save sericulture industry from ruination

RAJSHAHI, Nov 19: Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has urged the government to stand by the silk-farmers of the district for saving the sericulture industry from ruination.
He also put emphasis on encouraging the silk-farmers by disbursing loan among them at a nominal interest rate.
The RCC mayor was speaking at a meeting held after forming a human chain demanding immediate government steps to save the traditional silk industry of Rajshahi.
'Campaign for Good Governance (CGG)', Rajshahi district committee organised the human chain.
Mr Liton said he had already met the finance and textile ministers in connection with the reopening of Rajshahi sericulture factories.
He said the process is underway to reopen the silk factories under public and private partnership in the district.
He further said some 800 people will be employed when the factories will be reopened.
The RCC mayor said when the mills will be in operation, more than 1,500 tonnes of silk yarn will be produced in Chanpainawabganj and Rajshahi districts which can be exported abroad after meeting the local demand.
Presided over by Prof Fazlul Huq, president of CGG, Rajshahi district, the meeting was addressed, among others, by President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abu Bakkar Ali and Central Vice-President of NASCIB Laikat Ali.
