Wednesday, 30 March 2011

FE Report
Commerce minister Faruk Khan Tuesday urged the country's business community to make efforts for raising export income and ensuring self-reliance on raw materials for furniture. "We have to increase the export earnings as price of products in international market goes up due to political instability in the Middle East and natural disaster in Japan," the commerce minister said referring to the fresh hike in Bangladesh's capital machinery import and its costing as well. He made the observation while addressing the inaugural ceremony of six-day Brand Furniture Fair 2011, organised by Bangladesh Furniture Exporters' Association (BFEA), at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. The minister said, "We can export a huge amount of furniture by using local raw materials, skilled manpower and technology alongside imparting proper training to the workers." He requested the people involved in the furniture industry to take care of their workers so that they could make the best performance. BFEA convener KM Akhteruzzaman said the furniture fair, the first of its kind in the country, has been organised in a bid to create market awareness and further promote the furniture demand. Customers will have some new designs of furniture on special discounts at the fair. BFEA will organise the fair every year from now on. Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) first vice president M Jasim Uddin, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) vice chairman Jalal Ahmed also spoke on the occasion. At least 10 renowned furniture manufacturers and exporters including Akhtar, Otobi, Hatil, Brothers, Partex, Navana, Furnitech, Legacy, Nadia and Quality (Noksha) are participating at the fair. BFEA has currently 24 members. The companies are offering 10 to 30 per cent discount on different items of furniture. The fair will remain open for all from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm everyday.
